Pruritus Ani "The worse itch of all"
If you have an itchy bum you may have Pruritus Ani.
This can be a mild itch to a severe life changing itch which is impacting on your life to such an extent that you cannot function properly. It is embarrassing and frustrating.
Prurutis can be caused by many things. Contributing factors are often the presence of haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas as well as other medical conditions.
Several factors may be at fault. A common cause is excessive cleaning of the anal area. Moisture around the anus, from excessive sweating or from moist, sticky stools, is another possible cause.
Cleanliness is almost never a factor. However, the natural tendency once a person develops this itching is to wash the area vigorously and frequently with soap and a washcloth. This almost always makes the problem worse by damaging the skin and washing away natural oils.
